Attorney at Law Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga and assistant to attorney at law Armands Smans participate in the international scientific conference
The 77th International Scientific Conference of the University of Latvia was held from 25 January to 31 March. This year the conference was held for the 77th time and it has become an integral part of scientific life with traditions going back almost half a century.
During the plenary meeting of 15 February “Protection of values stipulated in the Constitution: perspective of different legal areas” the attorney at law Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga led the presentation “Presumption of innocence – nature and consequence of violation”. Although the presumption of innocence is an old and fairly well studied principle of criminal proceeding, events of most recent times in both the practice of application of law as well as process of legislation, compel one to turn once again to the assessment of the understanding and meaning of this fundamental principle.
Also, the assistant to the attorney at law of our firm Armands Smans participated in the conference on 15 February, presenting the report “Renewal of criminal proceedings due to newly established circumstances – current issues”. The presentation discusses the issues in relation to the possibility of renewing criminal proceedings, where the court judgment or decision, or a public prosecutor’s penal order has come into legal force. The report analysed, inter alia, certain examples from cases of the law firm “Rode un Partneri”, where they have managed to reach an outcome beneficial to the client, namely, renewal of the criminal proceeding due to newly established circumstances.
